Dutch Police Action in Indonesia
The two Dutch so-called “police actions” of 1947-1949 in Java and Sumatra were in fact military campaigns aimed at preventing or delaying Indonesian independence. During World War II, the Dutch East Indies was conquered by the Japanese in 1942, and the Netherlands was slow to acknowledge the new strength of Indonesian nationalism after 1945, though Sukarno and his allies had already declared Indonesian independence. The Dutch tried to reassert their authority before negotiating, attacking Sukarno’s republic in 1947 and overrunning it in 1948, but a combination of fierce guerrilla resistance and outside political pressure forced the final recognition of Indonesian independence in 1949. With the loss of the old Netherlands Indies, the Dutch Empire had lost its most important territory and was effectively defunct.
