The 17th-century playwright Molière, perhaps France’s greatest comic genius, created a store of comic figures and used them to expose the follies and vices of contemporary society. He went beyond traditional comic roles to confront his audience with profound observations on character, satirizing self-delusion and rigid adherence to social convention. This excerpt is from Tartuffe and translates as “It is public scandal that constitutes offence, and to sin in secret is not to sin at all.” (Recited by an actor.)
