John Gielgud

Sir John Gielgud is widely regarded as one of the finest Shakespearean actors of the 20th century. Here he is pictured in the lead role of Hamlet by William Shakespeare, a part he first played in 1929 and repeated on many occasions. In Peter Greenaway’s 1991 film Prospero’s Books, based on The Tempest, he spoke the words of all the play's characters.
