David Garrick

David Garrick
The greatest English actor of the 18th century, David Garrick was also arguably the first modern director. His productions employed stage lighting and naturalistic set designs, while his performances, which included many of the major Shakespearean roles, showed skilful characterization, whether in comedy, tragedy, or farce. This painting is by William Hogarth, the English painter and engraver.
