| Süleyman Demirel, ninth president of Turkey, served four terms as prime minister over four decades. His third term ended in 1979 when he was toppled by a military takeover after failing to deal with persistent terrorism and chronic unemployment in Turkey. Though banned from politics for ten years by the new constitution imposed in 1982, he returned as prime minister in 1991 before being chosen as president in 1993. | ||||||
