The Ark, Hammersmith, London
The Ark, designed by Ralph Erskine, is an imaginative example of Post-Modern architecture. Visual allusion to a ship is clearly made by the articulation of the storeys, roof, and liftshafts. Its lower storeys hidden by the Hammersmith Flyover beside which it is sited, The Ark appears to float, and the conceptual fusion of a building, bound by immobility, and a ship, in perpetual motion, is made.
