Brooch of Tara

The Brooch of Tara, dating from the 8th century ad, is a celebrated example of a Celtic ring brooch. It takes the form of a hoop decorated with a delicate filigree of spiral and geometric motifs and anthropomorphic elements. Fixed to clothing by the pin, as shown here, it was probably intended to be worn at the shoulder. It was found at Bettystown, Ireland, and put on display at the National Museum of Ireland, Dublin.
