IJsselmeer Dam, Netherlands
The IJsselmeer Dam (the Afsluitdijk), which was completed in 1932, stretches for 31 km (19 mi) between the Dutch provinces of North Holland and Friesland. In addition to supporting a four-lane motorway, the dam contains navigation locks to permit boat traffic and drainage sluices to regulate water flow. It is a stunning example of the country’s long-term land-reclamation projects.
