Charles VI

Charles VI
In 1711 Charles VI succeeded his brother Joseph I to the throne of the Holy Roman Empire and inherited the Habsburg lands; thereupon he gave up his claims to the Spanish throne, over which the War of the Spanish Succession had been waged since 1701. To ensure his family’s succession in his own lands he passed in 1713 the Pragmatic Sanction in favour of his daughter Maria Theresa.
