Ypres in Ruins
The town of Ypres in Belgium was almost completely devastated during World War I. A key strategic base in the Allied defence of access to the English Channel, the town was the object of many German offensives. Three major battles in which the Allies held back the German forces were fought in or around Ypres, and are known collectively as the Battle of Flanders.
