Herculaneum

Herculaneum
Like the neighbouring city of Pompeii, Herculaneum was buried by more than 15 m (50 ft) of lava, ashes, and mud by the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 ad. Extensive archaeological excavations of the site have been carried out since its discovery in 1706.
