François René de Chateaubriand
Based on his travels, French writer and statesman François Auguste René Chateaubriand introduced images of North America into French literature during the first half of the 19th century. His autobiography, Memoirs from Beyond the Tomb (1849-1850), is his best-known work. Chateaubriand’s portrait is by Anne-Louis Girodet-Trioson and is in the Musée d'Histoire in St Malo, Brittany.
