Fred Sinowatz
Fred Sinowatz succeeded Bruno Kreisky as leader of the SPÖ (the Austrian Socialist Party) and Chancellor of Austria in 1983. In 1986 he vociferously opposed Kurt Waldheim's controversial candidacy for the presidency of Austria—Waldheim was found to have lied about his knowledge of Nazi war crimes. After Waldheim's election, Sinowatz resigned both his posts, and was succeeded by Franz Vranitzky.
