Indian Independence Celebrations
A street parade in 1947 celebrates the independence of India from British rule. Despite the initially elitist background of the Indian National Congress, Indian nationalism had become a mass movement by the 1940s, able to mobilize and command immense popular support. However, independence was accompanied by the violence of Partition, and the hopes of many early Indian nationalists for a free and united Indian subcontinent remain unrealized to this day.
