Of all the famous composers attracted to Vienna in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, Franz Schubert was the only one who was born and raised in the city. As well as his extensive collection of songs, Schubert composed eight symphonies and several chamber works in his short life. This excerpt is taken from the string quartet no. 14 in D Minor, which he completed in 1824. The well-known composition, entitled Death and the Maiden, conveys pathos as well as a powerful sense of fear, reflecting something of Schubert's emotions after more than a year of serious ill-health.
