Gotthold Ephraim Lessing
The playwright and critic Gotthold Ephraim Lessing (1729-1781) was one the most prominent protagonists of the German Enlightenment. With his play Miss Sara Sampson (1755) he established the genre of "bürgerliches Trauerspiel" (tragedy of middle-class life). His other influential works include the comedy Minna von Barnhelm (1767) and the dramatic poem Nathan der Weise (1779).
