Jacques Delors

Jacques Delors
A former minister of economics in the government of François Mitterrand, Jacques Delors served as president of the commission of the European Community, and its successor organization the European Union, between 1985 and 1992. An enthusiastic advocate of a more integrated Europe, among the landmarks of his presidency were the accession of Spain and Portugal to membership of the EC in 1986, and the signing of the Maastricht Treaty, which established the basis for a single European currency, in 1992.
