| This painting by Francisco de Herrera the Elder (Prado, 1628) depicts St Bonaventure joining the Franciscan order, an event that took place in 1243. In his philosophical and theological writings this scholastic thinker attempted to reconcile certain elements of the Aristotelian doctrine with the Platonic system and the Augustinian theory of illumination.
