Marshal Lyautey and the Sultan Moulay Youssef
The first French resident-general, after Morocco became a French protectorate, was Marshal Louis Lyautey (seated second from right). He had a genuine interest in the country and the people and did much to conserve Moroccan culture. Lyautey also oversaw the contruction of roads, schools, and hospitals, and a major port at Casablanca. He is shown here dining with the sultan of Morocco, Moylay Youssef (seated second from left), in 1925. Lyautey worked closely with Youssef, though from 1920 French rule was challenged by a revolt led by Abd-el-Krim.
