Camargue (horse)

Encyclopedia Article

Camargue (horse), small, grey-white breed of horse that has inhabited the marshlands of the Camargue region (around the delta of the River Rhône) in southern France for centuries. Its origin is ancient and it has been subjected to much crossing, with the Barb in particular. Running wild, it breeds in free-ranging herds although annual round-ups and selective gelding have helped control and improve the breed. It is also used to herd the local black bulls. The height of a Camargue at the shoulder is between 13.2 and 14.2 hands (137-147 cm/54-58 in). The head is heavy, the neck short, and the shoulders upright. The eyes are slightly to the side of the head. The chest is large and barrel-shaped and the legs short and strong with large feet. The coat is rough, and the mane and tail are full.
