Oxford Brookes University, institution of higher education in Oxford, Oxfordshire, south-central England. The history of the university dates from 1865, when the Oxford School of Art was founded; after many incarnations it became Oxford Polytechnic in 1970, and achieved the status of university in 1992. Some 15,570 full-time students (2001) receive tuition on three campuses within 9.6 km (6 mi) of the city centre. The university is organized into 12 schools: Architecture; Art, Publishing, and Music; Biological and Molecular Sciences; Business; Computing and Mathematical Sciences; Engineering; Health Care; Hotel and Restaurant Management; Humanities; Languages; Planning; and Social Sciences and Law. The university is administered by a board of governors.
