Liverpool John Moores University

Liverpool John Moores University, institution of higher education, in Liverpool, Merseyside, north-western England. The university’s history dates from 1823, when the Liverpool Mechanics’ and Apprentices’ Library was founded. The Liverpool Polytechnic, established in 1970, was accorded university status in 1992. Some 24,000 (2004) students are enrolled in the university. Tuition is organized into six faculties: Business and Law; Education, Community, and Leisure; Health and Applied Social Sciences; Media, Arts, and Social Science; Science; and Technology and Environment. With the exception of one that is about 6 km (4 mi) outside Liverpool, there are some 30 teaching sites located close to the city centre. The university is administered by a board.
