Glamorgan, University of

Glamorgan, University of, institution of higher education in Pontypridd, in the borough of Rhondda Cynon Taff, in south Wales. Dating from 1913 when the South Wales and Monmouthshire School of Mining was established, the institution became the Polytechnic of Wales in 1975, and was granted university status in 1992. More than 21,000 students are enrolled (2007) in five faculties: Advanced Technology; the Cardiff School of Creative and Cultural Industries; the Glamorgan Business School; Health, Sport, and Science; and Humanities and Social Sciences. In addition to these faculties there is a Combined and Foundation Studies Unit, which forms part of the Centre for Lifelong Learning, and a Faculty of Further Education and Collaborative Activities. The university merged with Merthyr Tydfil College in May 2006. In January 2007 the university formed a strategic alliance with the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama in Cardiff, which had previously been a constituent institution of the University of Wales. A new campus was built in Cardiff to house the School of Creative and Cultural Industries and opened in September 2007.
