Map of Bootle

Bootle, town in Sefton borough, north-western England. Only 5 km (3‚ mi) north of the city of Liverpool, it has been engulfed by the conurbation, and the boundary between the two has become almost non-existent. Situated on the estuary of the River Mersey where it flows into the Irish Sea, Bootle today boasts approximately 2.5 km (1y mi) of docks, some of the newest and largest in the port of Liverpool.

The village of Boltelai appears in the Domesday Book and the streams that surrounded it teemed with salmon and otter. However, expansion during the industrial revolution and the growth of the docks in the early 19th century destroyed their aquatic habitat. Population 291,100 (2000 estimate).
