Lira, former monetary unit of Italy. The lira consisted of 100 centesimi. As at late 2001, 2,143.81 lire equalled US$1. The lira was replaced on January 1, 2002, by the European single currency, the Euro, at which point 1 Euro equalled 1,936.77 lire. The Bank of Italy was the bank of issue for the lira.

The currency of the Vatican City, which was equal to the Italian lira, was also replaced by the Euro in 2002.
