Windows Live® Search Results Lira, former monetary unit of Italy. The lira consisted of 100 centesimi. As at late 2001, 2,143.81 lire equalled US$1. The lira was replaced on January 1, 2002, by the European single currency, the Euro, at which point 1 Euro equalled 1,936.77 lire. The Bank of Italy was the bank of issue for the lira.
