Kuna

Kuna, monetary unit of Croatia. The kuna consists of 100 lipas. As at early 2007, 5.65 kuna equalled US$1. The kuna took its name from the currency used by the Fascist Ustaše government that controlled Croatia from 1941 to 1945 during World War II, a choice that provoked protests from Serbs, Jews, and Roma (Gypsies). As part of the efforts to bring hyperinflation under control, in May 1994 Croatia changed currencies from the Croatian dinar (which replaced the Yugoslav dinar in December 1991) to the kuna. The Bank of Croatia (Hrvatska Banka Narodna) is the bank of issue.
