University College

Encyclopedia Article

University College, college of the University of Oxford, England. Popularly known as 'Univ', the college was founded in 1249, and is therefore one of the oldest colleges (along with Merton and Balliol) in Oxford, and arguably the very oldest. Male and female undergraduates are accepted. The head of college is known as the master. The college contains the Shelley Memorial (1893), a statue of the poet Percy Bysshe Shelley, who was expelled in 1811 for publishing a pamphlet defending atheism. Other famous alumni include Clement Attlee and Bill Clinton.
