Clare College, college of the University of Cambridge, England. Founded in 1326 by Elizabeth de Clare of the Clare family, and known for its first 500 years as Clare Hall, Clare was the first college in Oxford or Cambridge to house Master, scholars, and students in a single community. The college's coat of arms is a variant of the Clare family's arms. Clare admits both male and female graduate and undergraduate students. The head of Clare College is called the Master. In 1966 Clare College created Clare Hall as an additional foundation to house graduate students. Famous alumni of Clare include the poets Siegfried Sassoon and John Berryman, and the writer and journalist John Hersey.
