Dublin City University, institution of higher education in Dublin, Republic of Ireland. Dublin City University was opened in 1980 as the National Institute for Higher Education and was awarded university status in 1989. It is located on a 20-hectare (50-acre) campus in the northern suburbs of Dublin. In 2000 the university had more than 8,000 students on campus. The university currently offers some 30 full-time primary degree programmes, and a range of other courses including postgraduate taught programmes, postgraduate research degrees, and distance education programmes (see Distance Learning). These programmes are organized by the Dublin City University Business School; the faculty of humanities; the joint faculty of education; the faculty of computing and mathematical sciences; the faculty of science and health; the faculty of engineering and design; and Fiontar (a special centre whose research and teaching are conducted in Gaelic). The joint faculties were established as a result of the institutional linkage between the university and St Patrick’s College, Drumcondra.
