Windows Live® Search Results Cwmbrân, town in Torfaen borough, south Wales. Cwmbrân is about 8 km (5 m) north of Newport. Gwent County Hall is in the town, which together with the neighbouring town of Pontypool forms part of Torfaen District Council. The town is linked by railway to Newport and Cardiff, and is near the M4 motorway. Cwmbrân was designated as a new town in 1949 when it had a population of 12,000, and was a former mining town. Developments since then have brought many new industries to the town including the manufacture of braking equipment, bread, biscuits, dairy machinery, electric razors, and valves. Older industries included brick-making. A BBC local radio station broadcasts from Cwmbrân. Population (1991): town 47,000; Torfaen District 91,200.
