Otranto, Strait of, channel of the Mediterranean Sea, between the heel of Italy and Albania. It links the Adriatic Sea to the north with the Ionian Sea to the south. It is 70 km (43 mi) long and 80 km (50 mi) wide, with a depth of between 90 and 735 m (295 and 2,400 ft), so ships of any draught can use it. The strait has been an important maritime strategic zone for hundreds of years.
