Exmouth, port and seaside resort, Devon, south-western England. Exmouth is located at the mouth of the River Exe on the south Devon coast, about 15 km (9 mi) south-east of Exeter. Originally a fishing village, Exmouth's development as a seaside resort began in 1792. The town has a sea front 3 km (2 mi) in length, stretching from the docks on the mouth of the River Exe eastwards to the red sandstone cliffs of Orcombe Point. The docks and harbour facilities are used by small ships and a large number of pleasure boats. Exmouth landmarks include Georgian terraces and A La Ronde, a house built in 1798 and decorated with shells and feathers. Population (1994 estimate) 31,770.
