Solent, channel between the Isle of Wight and Hampshire, southern England, with Southampton and Portsmouth on its coasts, and 5-8 km (2-5 mi) wide. The Solent was formed by the erosion of Hampshire chalk during the last Ice Age, before which it was the “Solent River”. A crossing of its western stretch is described in Tennyson's poem, Crossing The Bar.
