Donegal Mountains

Encyclopedia Article

Donegal Mountains, range in county Donegal, north-western Ireland, split into two smaller ranges, the Derryveagh Mountains in the north, and the Blue Stack Mountains in the south, just north of Donegal town. The River Finn flows east between the two ranges. In the north, Mount Errigal is the highest peak in north-west Ireland, reaching 752 m (2,467 ft), while the Blue Stack Mountains rise to 676 m (2,217 ft). The conical-peaked ranges are of a similar composition to the North West Highlands of Scotland, consisting of very old rocks, mainly metamorphic and Precambrian quartzite with some old red sandstone in the Derryveaghs. The pasture is rough and there is farming on a small scale, with some cattle, pigs, and poultry.
