The peak is in the Macgillycuddy's Reeks range extending west to east inland along the Iveragh Peninsula, county Kerry. Carrantuohill is about 19 km (12 mi) south-east of Killarney and just west of the Lakes of Killarney. It is a part of a larger mountain mass covering much of south-west Ireland and consisting of old red sandstone folded east to west to form deep valleys, through one of which Carrantuohill is drained to the east via the River Laune, which empties into Dingle Bay in the north.
