British Association for the Advancement of Science, association founded in 1831 which aims to promote the understanding and development of science and technology, and to enhance public recognition of their contribution to cultural and material well-being. The Association is a registered charity, and membership is open to any individual or corporate body that shares its aims. It is based in central London, and has a network of around 30 regional branches. The Association also aims to encourage discussion of ethical, social, and environmental issues raised by the advancement and application of science and technology, and to encourage people to participate in scientific activities and careers. To these ends, it carries out a range of activities, including an annual meeting or festival that takes place over several days, and involves hundreds of speakers and thousands of participants, and acts as a shop window for science and technology. Many of the Association's activities are directed towards young people, to encourage enthusiasm for science. It organizes science clubs, competitions, and awards and publishes a magazine for younger members (as well as a quarterly magazine for adult members). The Association aims to promote public understanding of science in its widest sense (encompassing natural and social sciences, engineering, mathematics, and medicine), by encouraging scientists to communicate their knowledge both directly and through improved media coverage, and by developing links with government, industry, and the City.
