Windows Live® Search Results Brecon (also Brecknock), town in Powys, south Wales, situated on the River Usk at its confluence with the Hoddu and Tarell. It is a shopping and service centre for the surrounding rural area. Christ's College was founded by Henry VIII in 1541 as a boys' school. The Priory Church of St John the Evangelist dates from the 11th century and was adapted for use as a cathedral in 1923. The ruins of the Norman castle lie at two sites, one of which was reconstructed during the reign of Edward I. Population (1990 estimate) 7,000.
