Moskva RiverMoskva River

Moskva River or Moscow River, river, Moscow and Smolensk provinces, western Russia, a tributary of the Oka River in the Volga basin. The river rises in the Moscow uplands and flows east through Mozhiask, Zvengorod, Moscow, Zhvkovskii, Bronnitsy, Voskresensk, and Kolomna, to join the Oka. The Moskva's main tributaries are the Ruza, Istra, Iauze, Pakhra, and Severka.

The river is important to Moscow's water supply and is regulated by a series of reservoirs and dams and linked by the Moscow Canal to the River Volga. It is frozen each year from November or December until March or April. The Moskva runs for 502 km (312 mi) which, because of a dam system, is navigable in the Moscow area and below. It drains an area of 17,600 sq km (6,794 sq mi).
