Morecambe Bay

Encyclopedia Article

Morecambe Bay, ingress of the Irish Sea between Lancashire and Cumbria, north-west England, extending 29 km (18 mi) inland. Fishing boats leave for the North Atlantic from the bay, and crossing from Lancashire was once the simplest and most scenic, if slightly dangerous, way to reach Ulverston; for Wordsworth it was “a decided proof of taste”. Because of its rich marine life and diverse bird population, Morecambe Bay is recognized as one of the most important wildlife sites in Europe.
