Much of the Lake District massif drains into the bay, located on the Irish Sea. Extensive sand banks along the bay are uncovered at low tide. Morecambe's main industry is tourism. The local fishermen are famous for catching shrimps using nets and horse-drawn carts from the shore. Heysham 5 km (3 mi) south along the coast is the site of a nuclear power station. Population (1989 estimate) 41,200.
