The Antrim Mountains comprise an ancient basalt plateau that is about 80 km (50 mi) in length and about 50 km (31 mi) across. The highest points are Trostan (554 m/1,817 ft) and Knocklayd (517 m/1,695 ft). The plateau of moorland and peat bogs is dissected by valleys that run eastwards to the rocky coast of the North Channel. These valleys are known as the nine Glens of Antrim, one of the last places in Northern Ireland where Irish was spoken. The Antrim Mountains and their glens are popular for hiking, and cattle farming and fishing are carried out here.
