Ibiza, capital of the island of Ibiza, western Mediterranean Sea. Located among the Balearic Islands, the island of Ibiza lies 100 km (60 mi) from the eastern coast of Spain. The town of Ibiza is located on Ibiza Bay in the south-east of the island. It has a small harbour and is the island's chief port. A modern town lies near the port. An older town is enclosed within a wall that was built during the 15th and 16th centuries. Ibiza’s castle and cathedral stand within this walled, or high, town. During its long history, the city has experienced Phoenician, Carthaginian, Roman, Byzantine, Moorish, Aragonese, and Spanish rule. It is a popular tourist resort. Population 44,114 (2007).
