Located in the province of Reggio di Calabria, the cape lies on the south-eastern coast of the “toe” of Italy, projecting into the Ionian Sea. Known to the ancients as Promontorium Herculeum, Cape Spartivento is 48 m (157 ft) above sea level. It is topped by a lighthouse that has a beam visible approximately 48 km (30 mi) away.
