Salvation

Encyclopedia Article

Salvation, the concept of being saved, as described in various religions. The type of release and the means by which it is gained vary enormously between different religions. In Christianity, individuals are thought of as being saved from eternal punishment through the redeeming death of Jesus Christ on the cross. In Buddhism people are saved from an endless cycle of reincarnation by attaining nirvana. The Buddhist may be aided in efforts to progress towards nirvana by Bodhisattvas or by Amida Buddha. In Hinduism, especially in the bhakti tradition, devotion to a god can bring salvation from reincarnation and is open to all those who have realized the true nature of Brahman, the Absolute.
