Olympias

Encyclopedia Article

Olympias (c. 375–c. 316 bc), Queen of Macedonia. The daughter of Neoptolemus, the king of Epirus, she married Philip II of Macedon in 357 bc, and was the mother of Alexander the Great. When Philip left her for Cleopatra, niece of Attalus, she is alleged to have instigated his assassination.

She gained much influence during Alexander's reign, despite feuding continually with Antipater, his governor in Macedonia. After Alexander's death in 323 bc she plotted to secure power for her grandson Alexander IV by killing Alexander's half-brother and immediate successor, Philip III Arrhidaeus. The Macedonian general Cassander besieged her at Pydna, and afterwards had her executed.
