Encyclopedia Article

Anthony Mann (1906–1967), pseudonym of Emil Anton Bundmann, American feature-film director. Mann was born in San Diego, California. In the late 1940s he directed a string of tough and stylish, though low-budget, dramas, and during the 1950s he directed some equally hard-hitting Westerns. Many of Mann’s Westerns starred American actor James Stewart, including Winchester '73 (1950), Bend of the River (1952), The Naked Spur (1953), and The Far Country (1955).

Mann collaborated with cinematographer John Alton in directing a series of pictures in the dark, atmospheric crime genre known as film noir; these included T-Men (1947), Raw Deal (1948), and Border Incident (1949). Among his other films are The Furies (1950), The Tall Target (1951), The Glenn Miller Story (1954), The Tin Star (1957), and El Cid (1961).
