Helle

Encyclopedia Article

Helle, in Greek mythology, the daughter of Athamas, king of Thessaly. With her brother, Phrixus, she fled from Ino, their cruel stepmother, on the golden-fleeced winged ram Chrysomallus. On their way to Colchis, Helle fell into the sea between Sigeum and Chersonesus and drowned, giving her name to the Hellespont (“sea of Helle”), a strait in modern-day Turkey now known as the Dardanelles. See also Golden Fleece.
