Gulf of Mannar (Manaar, Manar), arm of the Indian Ocean extending east to west between India and Sri Lanka at a width of 160-200 km (100-125 mi). The gulf receives the River Tambraparni from the coast of India and the Aruvi Aru from that of Sri Lanka. It is known for pearl banks near Sri Lanka. The Gulf of Mannar Marine National Park was established in 1989.
