Royal Leamington Spa, town in Warwickshire, England. Leamington Spa lies on the River Leam, adjacent to Warwick and close to the M40 motorway. It is an elegant Georgian spa town (developed since the late 18th century) with saline springs and a Royal Pump Room (1810). The “Royal” prefix commemorates Queen Victoria's visit to the spa (1838). Leamington Spa has some light industry, but with its extensive and picturesque parks, such as Jephson Gardens and the Pump Room Gardens, it is essentially a residential town for the Midlands. Lawn tennis, as opposed to real or indoor tennis, originated in the town. Population (1991) 42,304.
