Windows Live® Search Results Kosrae, island state, Federated States of Micronesia, in the Caroline Islands, western Pacific Ocean. Easternmost of the Carolines, it is a hilly, volcanic island, about 109 sq km (42 sq mi) in area. Agricultural products include taros, oranges, breadfruit, and bananas. Under Japanese mandate after World War I, it was heavily fortified during World War II, and was bombed by American forces; in 1945 it was surrendered with the defeat of Japan. In 1947 the Carolines were placed under the United States-administered Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands, and in 1979 Kosrae became part of the newly formed Federated States of Micronesia. Population (1988 estimate) 6,500.
